Lighthouses and Luaus

From our house on Anini Beach we could see the
Kilauea Point Lighthouse so we decided one day
to take the quick drive over and check it out.

The area is a bird sanctuary and the area surrounding the
lighthouse is just covered with beautiful birds.

A little education along the way is always good.

The lighthouse was originally built in 1913.
And even though we saw a light from our house
every night...it is no longer a
"working lighthouse"

You can still see the big light,
but this little one sitting out front is
what actually lights up the shoreline.

I got a little tickled at Austin, because he was really excited to
see a working lighthouse, but when we got down there and saw
what it was he dropped his shoulders and said
"I feel like I have been robbed"

I guess we need to get on the hunt for an actual
"working lighthouse" and make the trip!

There were several species of birds that make their home on the
side of the cliffs around the lighthouse.
It was really beautiful to see.

A quick family shot...
it was a little windy out on the point.

Working or not
it was beautiful to see.

The ocean was a beautiful blue and we enjoyed watching
the waves crash on the rocks...

And even caught a glimpse of a large sea turtle floating off
the shore... it had to have been big, because we were very far away...

One last photo from the road and we were off...

This little guy hopped down on the ground and looked like
he was posing for a picture.  His little red head was beautiful.

Next we were on to our Luau.

Smith's Tropical Paradise.
It was funny to be going to an authentic
Hawaiian Luau with a name like Smith...
but it really was a family affair and they were all
originally from Hawaii.

There were a TON of Peacocks and Peahens on the property
and they were doing their own thing and did not seem to mind
that we were there at all.

We all stopped and took a family photo on this little
red bridge and then headed off to walk around the grounds before dinner.

This little Peacock was looking for a girlfriend and almost would not
let me off the bridge...

Austin really enjoyed watching the Peacocks.  He would stand back
and watch the Peacocks follow around a Peahen and try to fan his
feathers and shake them to get their attention.

One Peahen in particular caught his attention.
She would run off any other Peahens that were around this one
certain Peacock, but when she was the only one around and he
would flaunt his feathers for her, she would turn her backside to
him and walk away or act like he was not even there.

Austin watched quietly for a while and from a safe distance
and then turned to Scott and explained what she was doing.
Scott started to laugh, put his arm around Austin's shoulder and said,
"Son...you can learn a lot from a Peacock..."
Austin looked at him a little confused and Scott said,
"It is like that for men and women of all kinds in this world...
we try and try to impress them and they just ignore us..."

So, with that, Austin's first lesson on dating was in the books!
Hopefully, he will have better luck with the ladies than his little
Peacock friend did.

Jackson and Papa enjoyed watching the big fish that were swimming
in the pond.

A view of the lovely lake area.

And more of Aunt Leisa's favorite flowers...
I can smell them now.

Before dinner we enjoyed watching the Imu Ceremony
where they uncovered the yummy little piggy
that had been cooking underground all day.

The Imu is the underground oven where they cook the
Kalua Pork that we ate at our Luau.

They uncovered the underground oven and
removed the leaves and rocks they used to steam
the pig and then we were off to dinner.

Pender...Table for 14...

Here is a shot of our group waiting our turn to go
up and fill our plates up!

Jackson posed for a quick picture with Aunt Leisa and
then we were off to an amazing show that took us
through the cultural history of Hawaii.

It was a wonderful day in the islands...

We still have a few more adventures before we
have to head back home...
come on back and see what fun we find next.

Hot as a Firecracker!

Well, this holiday the temperature outside is
right in line with the title of this post...
People, it's HOT!
We have had 100+ degrees since we got back home...
our grass is dying, plants are dying...
I'm DYING!

Did I tell you,
It's HOT!!

Anyway...
I should stop complaining...
I have air conditioning and a way to pay for
the really big bill that will follow,
so I should be thankful...

I thought I would set a festive little table
in honor of the 4th of July...
and then tonight when it was time for dinner
Austin came in and asked if we were eating outside
since there was a bunch of "stuff" on the table...
still workin' on these boys... still workin'

Come on in a see all of my "stuff"

I found the placemats at Old Time Pottery.
A fun mix of chambray blue, red and navy plaids.

A red geranium sits in the middle of the table
and will stay inside for a while...
maybe I will be able to baby it and keep it alive.

I placed the potted plant down inside
a Pfaltzgraff Heritage mixing bowl and filled in the
the gaps with some festive tissue paper.

All set and ready to go...

We saved a seat just for you...

Flatware is Cambridge...

Pfaltzgraff Heritage dinnerware that I have had since
college.  It has held up well and we have only broken
one piece...pretty tough stuff.

The glasses are ones we use every day.
They were a boxed set from Big Lots.

Since the weather man says there is not a break in the
heat any time soon, I think we'll celebrate the 4th from inside this year.

Since I am trying to watch my pennies
after returning from vacation,
I just used items I had on hand for my table...
nothing new or overly exciting,
but if I could run out to grab the perfect little touch, I think I would have
to grab a set of these Stars and Stripes luncheon plates from
Pfaltzgraff.

And a set of these little sundae dishes...

They would be a perfect little touch, don't you think.

Hope everyone has a wonderful
time with their family and friends as we
celebrate our freedom and this great nation
that we live in.

Happy Independence Day!

A Little Island Hopping

On Saturday, June 16th we hopped over to Kauai.
A short little 30 minute plane ride and we were off
on our next adventure!

Our next house was right on Anini Beach...
we walked out our back door and there we were!

Beautiful trees lining the property and down the beach.

Another view of our back porch and all of the beach chairs waiting
to be drug down to the beach to soak up some sun!

One of our favorite things in Hawaii were of course the Pineapples!
But we did not get them from a local store or plantation...
best pineapples in Hawaii came from Costco!
Who Knew!
(well, other than Rick...he was the one who told us...buy the pineapples in Costco)

Even though we hopped islands early in the morning,
after we got there, got luggage, rental cars...lunch...
food and such it turned out to be a long day.

Sunday was Father's Day so before we headed out to church,
we snapped a few pictures...
My Three Men...

And my little boys and me...

We had packed a picnic lunch and headed to the Kauai Coffee Company
to picnic on the grounds before heading out on our
daily adventure.

There was a storm coming in and it was
VERY windy.  Leisa had worn her hat out of the car, but when it
flew off, Papa grabbed it and plopped it on his head!
I had to snap a picture of him sporting her hat...
Lookin' Good!!

There was a little museum of antique coffee plantation
machines....

And of course, there was lots of yummy coffee to sample.

There were these neat little steaming coffee cup stamped in
the concrete all along the pathways that surrounded the
main building.

Austin and Aunt Leisa enjoying a cup of coffee on the porch.
He is still not a believer... just give the boy a Pepsi and he'll
take his caffeine that way.

We left the coffee plantation and headed to Waimea Canyon.
The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

Beautiful views all around as far as the eye could see

But I have to admit, once you have been to the Grand Canyon in
Arizona...the rest is just a little hole in the ground.

A quick snapshot of the entire group.
From Left to Right:
Austin, Me, Scott. Jackson. Leisa, Rick, Kerri. Joy. Michele,
Joan, Bobby, Tami, Mariah, and Gary.

The sun finally came out and made for a pretty shot,
but it was still very windy!

Kalalau Lookout...down below you can see the ocean...
this is along the Na Pali coast of Kauai...

We spotted three little waterfalls tucked in the canyon.

After a quick bite to eat at the
Brick Oven Pizzeria we were back to
the house to walk on the beach and just enjoy
the cool evening air.

Come on back...more adventure to come!
