Simple...but it's a Start

After spending many weeks drooling over all of the
beautiful Tablescapes that are featured over at
Between Naps on the Porch
for Tablescape Thursday
I have been wanting to run out and buy every dish I could find.
Every where I go I find myself looking at plates,
chargers, place mats and napkins...
Would this make a good centerpiece?
Looking at trays, platters and bowls...Oh My!

I bought a set of red flatware one day while
shopping with Mom and told her I could use it
for Christmas, Valentines Day...4th of July...
so many uses....
She thought I was nuts.
But, we have to eat...every day...and we have to use a fork too...
right...might as well be a pretty fork.
That's my story and I'm sticking too it.

But I have had to stop and tell myself that these beautiful collections
of dishes that I drool over and dream about did not jump into these ladies
cabinets overnight.  They are collections that have come over time,
and mine will too...
I have a good start, I just need to learn to mix and match.
Use what I have and add to it over time.

Soooo.....

I decided that tonight I was going to set the
table for our family dinner.
For the last six weeks, Scott and Austin have been so
busy  that dinner together was only
on Wednesday night before church....and that was because we
were eating out!

But tonight I decided to try my hand at a
Candy Corn Tablescape.
It is simple...still room to add to it,
but that is fun part, right?

I removed the leaf from my kitchen table to make it
a little more intimate...you know...
Make the kids talk to us!
Austin says he still feels weird eating at the
smaller table, but I think he'll get used to it.

Pull up a seat and let's see what is on the table.

I used my Phaltzgraff Heritage white dinner plates
that I have had since college.  I placed them on the orange
place-mats that I found at TJMaxx.
The black napkins came from TJMaxx as well.
The Candy Corn bowls came from Kohl's
this year in their Halloween section.
They were on sale, had an extra 20% off coupon...
and I had $20 worth of Kohl's cash,
so they were a steal.

I used the water pitcher that matches my
white Heritage dishes and placed some
Candy Corn colored daisies in to use
as the centerpiece.

As I looked back at these pictures, I decided I have
a lot to learn about floral arranging as well...
Should have cut the stems down just a bit so
all you see are the flowers...

I just grabbed one of the bunches of flowers from Publix
when Jackson and I made a grocery run this afternoon...
Something about the neon orange daisy it just a little weird...
anyway...

I pulled out this orange set of Cambridge Flatware
that I had found at Old Time Pottery.  I originally
bought it thinking I would use it for an
Auburn Football Tablescape,
but Halloween is a good excuse to use it, too!

The table is set and we are ready to eat...
Won't you join us?

I did not know how my three men would take
sitting down to a table set with matching
accessories and such, but I think
they enjoyed it as much as I did.

I know I have a lot to learn about properly setting a table,
and I think that is a good thing to know, and a good
thing to pass to my boys.  I want to raise them to be
fine southern gentlemen and know which fork to use for dinner.

It was a lot of fun setting the table and having a nice
dinner ready to eat when Scott was home from work.
Our lives are so hectic and we are always on the go,
but it is nice to sit and talk for a while
and enjoy a few minutes of peace with my family.

So as simple as it may be I am going to be linking up to
Tablescape Thursday at
Between Naps on the Porch

Hop on over and look at all of the beautiful
dishes, dishes and more dishes!!!

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Very cute! I like that you used a kid-friendly theme for your tablescape. Boys and girls alike enjoy it when we make our mealtimes more festive!

  3. For your first tablescape you did fantastic!! The colors all work from the flowers to the flatware. You have a great start with the white dishes! I usually look for patterned salad/ dessert plates to layer with white plates. I find most of my table things at Goodwill etc. so the cost doesn't scare Mr. B too much ;) Welcome to the addicting world of tablescaping! You are among friends :)

  6. I love it, Sandra. Welcome aboard. I'm so glad you joined in the fun. It took me forever to join in because I don't really have too many collections of dishes or linens but you will soon learn that not all the guests at Tablescape Thursday do. I've even set up a single setting on a tray--TV dinner type of post. The fun is all the inspiration and creativity. I had not joined for a while and now I'm ready to go shopping for new goodies. You'd be surprised to see that even the dollar store has inspiration.
    I look forward to visiting.
    Much love!
Oh, and you'll see how much you'll pick up about proper table setting from Susan and all the other ladies. I sure have.

  7. Welcome to Dishaholics (not so Anonymous)You did a great job! Only problem is, now you will be learning how to hide your new dishes under the bed, in the linen closet, under the sink........

  10. Your first tablescape of many, I hope!! I love candy corn, and I might just have to run over to Kohl's and see if they have those adorable dishes! Don't you love a good bargain! Your table is just so darn pretty and inviting! I know what you mean about your boys, I did that when my son was growing up too, I'm still working on him and he's in college! Have a good weekend!

  11. I like your candy corn table! I know you are busy with those boys, so I'm glad you took a little time to post your tablescape - beware - it can become expensive - you want to rush out and buy every dish you see! :) I haven't posted a tablescape in quite some time - busy life gets in the way.
    Blessings,
    Ava

  12. I am so happy you want to raise your son's to be fine gentlemen. We may not be southern but I tried to raise my son to be a gentlemen and at 26 I am so proud of what a kind, polite man he is. Not sure if he knows which fork to use! Your first tablescape is so nice and I was eyeing those dishes at Kohl's too. I like the idea of Candy Corn flowers. Welcome to tablescaping and it sounds like you are hooked like I am!

  14. Hello! I'm visiting from BNOTP. I love the colors in your tablescape. But what I really like is how you actually used the set table for a family dinner. I always try to set a proper table when the grandchildren are visiting. Young families get into such a time crunch that some things go by the wayside.

  18. Sandra, I love your tablescape! I was dying to know how the guys liked it. Those candy corn salad dishes are the cutest thing ever! It's all I can do to keep myself from rushing out to Kohl's this second to buy some. I bet they are all gone as cute as they are! The flowers were the icing on the cake. Great table setting!

  19. Great table!!! And I think part of the fun of tablescaping is discovering special "finds" for a great price and RE-discovering things we already have. And Susan and all of these talented ladies (and Bill) who post are the best teachers! Always more to learn as I rediscover every Thursday!!

  20. Welcome to the world of tablescaping. You have a good eye for design...balance...and color. You and I have the same philosophy about collecting tabletop items...you're right...it will happen over time. The hunt is actually half the fun! Your boys will absorb what you're teaching them without even knowing it...and you'll be pleased when one day, they choose a young lady who loves the art of gracious entertaining, too. Way to go! Thank you for inviting us in for a peak of your delightful design. Cherry Kay

  21. How thrilled do you think I am to see that you want to raise your boys to be "fine Southern gentlemen"? I am just pleased as punch! No, I'm not from the South (Midwesterner), but I share a lot of Southern sensibilities. Raising young men to be true gentlemen with an appreciation for some of life's more genteel offerings is something I greatly admire. It seems a given that we want to raise our girls in that manner, but the boys often slip through the cracks. Hooray for you! I really like the candy corn colors with the black added...not too intimidating for the youngsters. Very nice! And you're right...my collection did not happen in a day, a week, a month, a year...it has been growing for nearly 30 years. It was harder to do as a young mother. Since I've been an empty-nester, though, I've all but lost my mind!!! Dishes, dishes everywhere!! :-) Have a great week!
